It is with a heavy heart that I must mention the passing of my father, Robert D. Haines, Jr., owner of the Argonaut Book Shop for more than 50 years. He passed away at the end of January from complications that arose after spinal surgery.
As you can imagine, there has been a lot to take care of in the last few months, and therefore I haven’t had much of a chance to catalog anything new, or to put together a list of new acquisitions. To make up for the fact that I haven’t been able to offer anything new, I am happy to offer 20% off some of the items that you have already seen. Please browse through the last three lists from the last year- all items are currently 20% off the original price.
I have tried to mark the items that have already been sold, but it is very possible that I may have missed a few, so please be aware, as always, that at all items offered are subject to prior sale.

RECENT ACQUISITIONS. The Library of Dr. Robert F. Chandler. California & the West at its Best.Our most recent lists offer titles covering California and the West from the collection of Dr. Robert J. Chandler. For decades, Bob Chandler was the historian for the Wells Fargo Bank History Department. During his long career Bob had papers published in a multitude of western historical journals and gave hundreds of talks within his expertise. Bob’s vast personal library will be dispersed for all to enjoy. That was his wish. The Argonaut Book Shop has gratefully been designated to handle Bob’s vast collection. Available are Parts I and II; Part III will be forthcoming. All items are recent acquisitions, offering a wide assortment of good, scarce, and rare material. Most of Bob’s books have his signature at the top edge of the inner cover. Thanks for taking a look!

STRICTLY CALIFORNIA Selections from Recent Collections, Part I: A thru M, and Part II: N thru Z. Our current list really is “Strictly California,” offering titles covering all aspects of its history, from the Spanish influx into California and Anza’s founding of San Francisco’s Presidio and Mission to Serra and the Missions, the Mexican-American War, the Overlanders and the Gold Rush, Statehood, and beyond.
Book Fair Miscellany, January – February 2018. This list included some of the miscellanous title taken for display at The 51st International Antiquarian Book Fair in Pasadena. Fri. Sat. Sun. February 9-11, 2018.
Holiday Miscellany, December 2017. Our current list really is a Holiday Miscellany with, we hope, something for everyone. Included within are good, solid and quite scarce titles on the American West, all in superb condition. Also within are a number of early California Press Books including collectible Leaf Books, a run of significant books on dog breeds, mid-19th century Lady’s Fashion Books, a few superb illustrated books, significant books on California, and much more.
Fall, 2017. The focus of our current list is the history of The American West including its outlaws and lawmen, cowboys and cattle trails, gunfighters and gamblers, Indians and pioneers, mountain men and frontiersmen, miners and mining, overland travel and trails and every other aspect of our Western heritage. The collector of most of the material began collecting forty years ago. His intention was to collect only the finest copies, with dust jackets when possible. Many of the books on this list are the finest copies available and are very difficult to secure in this condition. There is more to come from this collection.
October: 2017. Our latest list emphasizes our specialty of California and the West but also includes other areas of interest. Our offerings range from important titles on early California Art & Artists to key works on African Natural History, Tibetan Exploration, first editions by the famous naturalist William Beebe, the first two volumes of Fortune Magazine, a fabulous bird’s-eye-view of San Francisco, Hurston’s great work, Mules and Men, a grouping of early Pasadena promotional brochures, a few 17th century titles, and much more. Let’s not forget the complete set of the epochal and notorious periodical, The Yellow Book.
